I sat down with him the other day in New York, and here's that conversation.

Fareed, welcome.

There's so much to talk about about what's going on in the world, but I first want to talk

a little bit about you and how you got to be the sage, presence you are in our debate.

You grew up in India, and it wasn't exactly a, like, up from the grassroots sort of story.

Tell me about your...

Sure.

I grew up in India.

My dad was a politician, and my mother was a journalist.

So I sometimes feel as though I've kind of ended up somewhere in between those two worlds.

My father was sort of after Indian independence, there was the generation everybody knows about

Gandhi and their ruined people like that.

My dad was the next generation, very idealistic, determined to fight against British rule.

Comes to, you know, comes to, goes to college, comes back, he gets a scholarship to go to
