which was used in the treatment of fur to create felt. But excessive exposure to those fumes could have terrible

consequences. Symptoms included brain damage, hallucinations, psychosis, and nervous twitching, which was sometimes known as Hatter's shakes.

In fact, this problem was so prevalent, it actually inspired Lewis Carroll to create the character of the Madhatter in Alice in Wonderland.

But despite the dangers inherent in his chosen profession, for a time life appeared to be
