Summary

Award-winning adventure romance author Stacy Gold would rather be on a river in the middle of nowhere than almost anywhere else. For fifteen years she worked as a commercial raft guide, river ranger, safety boater and kayak instructor in the southeast, Rocky Mountains and PNW. Since 1987 she’s run more than fifty rivers in three countries, including self-support kayaking the Grand Canyon.

While her “creeking” days are behind her, Ms. Gold’s basement is still stacked with play boats, squirt boats, a tandem, and a couple river runners—and they are not gathering dust. When she’s not busy kayaking, skiing, mountain biking, or hiking, with her husband and happy dogs, she writes stories about independent, capable women finding love and adventure in the great outdoors. Her latest novel, Wild at Heart, recently released.

Hey, folks, welcome to the adventure sports podcast. I'm your host, Mason Gravely. Today we're talking to Stacey Gold about, in a lot of ways, her career path in the

0:22.8

outdoors. And one thing I've learned pursuing my own career path is you never know where it's going to end up.

0:29.0

And it's probably the case if you're pursuing a career in the outdoors. It's not going to be

0:34.9

linear. It's not going to be this nice laid-out plan, much like an adventure.

0:39.4

You might have an idea of where you're going or what you're shooting for, but my goodness,

0:44.1

trying to make a living doing some of this stuff, whether it's guiding or retail or anything

0:49.4

like that. It can be very tough. I mean, I started out wanting to work in bike touring and bike packing as a guide,

0:56.2

and I ended up working in marketing for a non-alcoholic brewery. So, you know, I definitely didn't see a lot of that coming and a lot of the steps in between.

1:05.5

And for Stacy, it was no different. What's cool about her story is she writes award-winning adventure romance novels. So take

1:14.4

romance novels, which are, you know, often overlooked in the bookstore by yours truly, but my

1:20.5

wife loves them. I've always remembered my grandma, had a ton of them in her house, loved them,

1:26.9

and they always, you know, gave, had that cheesy cover of two beautiful people just like making out or something.

1:32.8

It was always just so dramatic.

1:34.7

But Stacy decided to make a twist on that whole genre and do adventure sports and outdoor sports

1:43.4

because she herself is a super badass woman.

1:46.6

She has run more than 50 rivers kayaking in three continents and did a self-supported

1:52.5

kayaking trip through the Green Canyon, stuff like that.

1:56.1

She's like, you know, a lot of the women in these books that I love don't reflect women like me

2:00.0

that are very strong,

2:01.6

very capable. And so she decided to kind of rework the whole genre and make it more,

2:07.1

honestly, realistic for the outdoors culture. So her latest book is Wild at Heart. It's coming out

2:13.6

this May. It's actually out now because it's June right now. You can find it anywhere you
