Summary

In this episode, Laura continues to break down Gabby and Brian’s behaviour using the police body worn camera footage from the Moab City Police Department. Laura highlights an important statement Brian makes about the relationship and finances which is overlooked by the responding officers and is yet another indicator of coercive control. Laura focuses on evidence that Brian is thinking about himself, whilst an emotional Gabby prioritizes and centres Brian’s needs over her own, as well as how sexism, a gender bias and misogyny played a role in green lighting and reinforcing Brian’s coercively controlling behaviour. 0:04.9	When the police pulled the van over, he sees Gabby very distressed.
0:10.5	She's crying, she's almost hyperventilating. Why was she so distressed?
0:15.2	The fact that she takes responsibility immediately, her disposition and demeanor
0:19.9	of almost walking on eggshells, not wanting to get him into trouble,
0:24.6	they're red flags to me. Why is he so calm?
0:29.3	He's apologetic to the police, he's trying to diffuse the situation when police
0:33.1	eventually speak to him about what happened, but he instantly puts a blame on her.
0:38.8	That's another red flag to me. Laura has encountered countless incidents of domestic violence
0:45.6	and believes the police officers missed an opportunity to stop tragedy in its tracks.
0:51.7	For me, it's a murder and slay motion. This was preventable. This was one human being behaving in a way
0:58.0	that was insidious, controlling a manipulative, not just to his partner, but to the police officers.
1:03.2	And he clearly lied to the police officers and they believed everything that he said.

1:21.7	You've just greenlit the abuser. You've just reinforced his behaviour and I think that he felt
1:34.0	relieved and I saw that relief. It was palpable. I saw it on camera and he's joking and he's
1:40.4	sort of making jokes when Gabby's there isolated in the van on her own, not even knowing what's going on.
