Adventure (ad·ven·ture): an unusual and exciting, typically hazardous, experience or activity.
That basically sums up life itself. The most unexpected, seemingly unfair, and hazardous things happen to us at every turn. We want adventure, but don't always love when it shows up. A life-altering injury is, by the definition above, an adventure. Well, it's not always exciting, but you get the picture.
To go from a collapsed spine at the age of 19 to being on a sponsored climbing expedition to the Ivory Coast is not an overnight journey, nor is it pleasant, but it is adventure. Astrid's story is one of hope, patience, and sheer grit to rise from what many would call a crippling situation (literally) to seeing the beauty in what happens to all of us at some point and accepting it as what life is all about.
Adventure doesn't always lead us down a peaceful path but teaches us to find peace no matter what path we're on.

| 0:00.0 | Hey, folks, welcome to the Adventure Sports podcast. |
| 0:24.0 | I'm your host, Mason. |
| 0:25.0 | Today's episode is a throwback to 2019 with Astrid Southam. |
| 0:31.1 | This episode was so amazing to me because Astrid was 19 years old when this happened to her, this accident, |
| 0:40.7 | this, um, we're going to get into it. But what, what I walked away from with this, um, |
| 0:47.0 | conversation was the most, one of the most powerful things I've ever heard on this podcast. And, |
| 0:52.5 | uh, I don't know if I've ever even said this, but it's something |
| 0:55.8 | she mentioned. It's something I've thought about a ton, and I don't want to spoil it for you, but I feel |
| 1:00.3 | like it's good to even mention here is, you know, so with an injury, it can be so detrimental to our |
| 1:07.8 | identity as adventure athletes. I know I've dealt with that with my knees. I |
| 1:12.2 | can't do. I used to be able to, you know, jump really high and dunk on people. I used to love to |
| 1:19.0 | play basketball and dunk a lot. And now I can't do that at all. And it's just taken, that was probably |
| 1:24.3 | four years ago now, and that's taken definitely some readjusting and |
| 1:28.9 | just, it's been wild. And that's something small, you know, it's nothing like what Astrid's gone |
| 1:34.4 | through. There's nothing like what a ton of y'all have gone through, but it happens to so many |
| 1:38.2 | of us and you might feel really alone when you're going through it. But something she said that was |
| 1:43.1 | so powerful was, |
| 1:44.9 | I want to get to the point where I'm glad it happened. I'm not just okay with it happening, |
| 1:51.8 | this injury or this redirection in life, but I'm actually glad it happened. And she was |
| 1:56.6 | inspired by someone that she saw who was also injured. That wasn't her thought originally. |
| 2:02.3 | That was someone told her that and then she told me. And I've heard that principle. So many |
| 2:07.2 | places since then, people who have had something and maybe they're not there yet, but I've |
