There are new allegations of misconduct against Los Angeles police centering on an anti-gang unit already accused of brutality and law-breaking.

It's May 1998, just weeks after Jason Chan, Indrelim, and Toxantan were convicted of Hangnor's

murder. A scandal is developing that will shine a harsh light on the LAPD's questionable interrogation tactics and other forms of misconduct.

The revelations begin to surface after three kilos of cocaine just disappear from the LAPD's evidence locker.

It all started when former officer Raphael Perez cracked the coat of silence wide open.

He was... An internal investigation reveals that the cocaine was taken by

Raphael Perez, a police officer in the LAPD's Rampart Division, just west of downtown.

And as part of his plea deal, Raphael Perez agrees to go public about criminal activity

within the division,

setting in motion what becomes known as the rampart scandal.

There are allegations police officers were involved in everything

from planning evidence to murder,

and as bad as that sounds it

appears it hasn't stopped officers from using

shockingly aggressive tactics.

Perez tells of police officers filing false reports, perjury, witness intimidation, bank robbing,

near fatal beatings during interrogations, unprovoked shootings of civilians, and murdering

gang members in the streets.

You know, you guys are biggest gang of a mall, man.

The allegations rocked the city and touched off a massive internal police investigation that has so far led to the resignations or

firings of 20 officers. In the end, 70 police officers are implicated and

all those officers are part of the Rampart Division's Crash Unit.
