Summary

orld cycling and microadventures: Alastair Humphreys' life-changing 46,000-mile, four-year bicycle journey around the world, popularizing microadventures for accessible local exploration, earning National Geographic Adventurer of the Year in 2012, and sharing insights on balancing normal life, parenting, and adventure.

Originally aired June 28, 2019

Alastair Humphreys is an adventurer, author, and motivational speaker. His first big adventure was completing a four-year bicycle journey around the world that consisted of 46,000 miles of cycling and changed his life forever. After the trip, he popularized the idea of microadventures - short, local, accessible adventures for the average person. This idea helped him achieve becoming a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year in 2012.

Alastair is a huge inspiration of mine and I hope you enjoy our conversation about life, parenting, and the delicate balance between normal life and pursuing adventure.

one of the main difficulties is to try to remember why I'm doing adventures, as in when I'm

0:07.2

up on a hilltop, I should be out there because I want to do it, not just because it'll look

0:11.5

great on Instagram. And the second aspect of it, I need to remember that social media is not

0:17.2

real life and I should not necessarily believe everything I see or even put on social media and just keep myself grounded in reality a little bit more.

Hey folks, welcome to the Adventure Sports podcast. I'm your host, Mason.

Gosh, happy New Year. I hope you're doing all right. And speaking of New Year, I'm taking it

0:50.1

just to hair easy this weekend. So I don't have a new episode for you, but I have a really amazing revisited one with

0:56.7

one of probably my biggest inspiration early on in my adventure career, which was Alistair Humphreys.

1:04.7

There's not enough I can say about Alistair and the impact he's had on me and how much I

1:09.4

enjoyed this conversation from a couple years ago.

1:12.2

But his book, Moods of Future Joyes about his journey around the world, his bike trip around the

world. I highly recommended it really set the tone for my life and for my adventure kind of mindset.

1:24.3

So it was awesome to talk to Alistair. I'd love to talk to him again soon,

1:27.7

but I thought it was just a good one to replay. I hope you're doing great out there. I hope

1:31.3

you're getting outside. I was self-admittedly having a terrible day today after a botched

1:37.4

camping trip. And my wife forced me out the door for an hour of paddleboarding. And, you know know I'm like oh you know that's not going to do

1:45.6

anything just getting out there you know for a little bit of time when I was going to have this long

1:50.0

trip but man it just totally turned my day around just one hour of paddleboarding was all it took to

1:56.5

just totally change my day and and maybe my week and maybe lead to something even better.

2:01.9

So don't neglect. What you can learn from Alistair is don't neglect the smallest bit of time

2:07.2

you can get outside. The smallest bit of time you can get doing an adventure.

2:11.4

And so this whole mindset he has and the book he's authored about microadventures is so
