Basist and lead vocalist for the rock band, Winger.

Together we break down the smash hit single, headed for a heartbreak, taken

from their 1988 self-titled debut album. Kipp shared how he had completely written and recorded

all the demos that the band went in and we recorded for the

first record. It was after it was recorded that they shopped the album around to a

number of record labels, eventually signing with Atlantic Records. In such an

image-driven time and music history with MTV being in its heyday, I always

felt like this particular track stood out from Winger's contemporaries at the time.

The progressive elements combined with drummer Rod Morgenstein's over-the-top drumming

was a complete 360 to what was happening elsewhere, and the hard rock and glam metal genres.

Kip was very upfront and honest when talking about producer Bo Hill's role with the record.

He captured the band doing what they do, but didn't have to go overboard with rewriting or arranging

parts because the demos and songs were so solid from the get-go.

And Kipp talks about his early days playing bass for Alice Cooper,

and how jumping ship from that gig to set out on his own

was a daunting prospect at the time, but something he felt he needed to do.
