Summary

Brandon is back with us again today to talk about his most recent adventure of solo crossing Yellowstone National Park this past winter. The trip was to set off alone for up to 12 days in the wild, traversing both Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, solo, and unsupported.  Branden’s gear was chosen to withstand heavy snows, gale-force winds, and temperatures of -40 Fahrenheit!

You can hear Branden on Ep. 687, talking about climbing Montana’s 50 highest peaks here

Today we're talking to a veteran of the podcast, and that is Brandon Joy.

right at the peak of winter. And if you know anything about

1:12.4

Yellowstone and Grand Teton, where this trip took place, oh my gosh, it can get so cold there in the

winter. It is brutal. It is winter there well after it should be winter, if you know what I mean. Like,

1:25.4

it is just freezing there so much of the time.

1:28.5

And so when Brandon, when I heard Brandon crossed it on foot, solo in the middle of winter,

1:34.5

I was absolutely mind-blown.

1:36.1

The most miraculous thing is he didn't die because that would have been the first thing

1:39.7

that happened to me.

1:40.5

I would have just shriveled and withered away and frozen to death because I don't

1:45.7

handle the cold well. So something that Brandon actually talks a lot about in this episode is just

1:50.7

what gear he brought on this trip. You know, gear is what makes trips possible. You can't just

1:56.0

cross Yellowstone on foot without anything. You need specialized gear. You need the right equipment.

2:03.3

But that doesn't mean that gear has to be brand new out of the box and the price of a home to
