Summary

Growing up on a farm in Scotland and being homeschooled until the age of 12 isn’t exactly the childhood you’d expect from an accomplished world-traveling adventurer that Mark has become.

Or is it?

Today we get to hear Mark put together the pieces of his earliest motivations, his two circumnavigations of the world by bicycle, and the idea behind his latest book, Endurance: How to Cycle Further.

Other accomplishments by Mark (not exhaustive)

  • Recipient of the British Empire Medal
  • Bicycled around the world twice
  • The fastest being 79 days, a Guinness World Record
  • Bicycled from Anchorage Alaska to Ushuaia Argentina
  • Bicycled from Cairo, Egypt to Cape Town, South Africa in 42 days (world record)

He is just a legend, just a total legend in the world

of cycling, the world of endurance and adventure sports, and just, you know, your general adventurer as

well. He's done some incredible things, including what we're talking about today, two circumnavigations

of the globe on bicycle, which is just mind-boggling.

And you're thinking, if you're thinking to yourself, you know, how do you bike around the world

1:17.7

because there's oceans? Don't forget about those. Well, that's, you know, that's a great point.

1:22.0

But Guinness World Record put out this kind of parameters for around the world cycling, which basically says you can't

1:30.1

deviate too far from where you start as far as, you know, if you go around the equator, you got to

1:35.9

kind of stay within five to ten degrees north and south. And then also it has to have a minimum

1:41.5

number of miles that you cycle, which is 18,000.

1:45.6

And so Mark has done that faster than anybody, which was just under 80 days, 79 days.
