On the night of May the 15th, 1855, gold coins and bars were delivered in three iron-bound boxes to London Bridge Station to be dispatched by the Southoutheastern railway to the continent. These boxes had been sealed and weighed by the carriers.

At the railway station they were placed in safes that were considered impregnable

and transferred to the Folkestone boat train under care of the guard. Each safe had two locks, and duplicate keys
