  • “Ironically just last month, the chief executive of YouTube, Susan Wojcicki, reiterated YouTube’s commitment to free speech as its ‘core value of the company’ and that their Terms of Service is ‘fully consistent with that value’. Needless to say, Russia is not buying it and as of today the government is threatening to ban YouTube outright unless the channels are reinstated.”

1:34.0

Let's start right in here. We got a fascinating development in the realm of TechLash. It's being widely reported that the Russian Federation is threatening to ban YouTube in retaliation for YouTube blocking two German language channels managed by the Russia today broadcast network.

1:52.0

Russia today is a global network that has outlets in a number of countries, including Germany, but as part of YouTube's ban on so-called COVID misinformation, two German channels owned and operated by Russia today have been shut down after violating YouTube's TOS, their terms of service.

2:11.0

As a result, Russia's communications ministry has issued a letter to Google demanding, quote, that all restrictions on YouTube channels RTDE and Defelenda parat operated by the Russia media outlet Russia today be lifted as soon as possible.

2:29.0

If they don't, the official communication made clear that Russia may indeed ban YouTube outright and or find Google if the channels are not fully restored.

2:39.0

YouTube issued a statement to the German news outlet Deutsche Wele or DW that it does not allow content on its platform that, quote, contradicts local health authorities or the World Health Organization's medical information about COVID-19.

2:55.0

Now, if you don't know this ban on the two German channels follows recent disciplinary measures taken against Sky News Australia by YouTube, which I know many of you enjoy, YouTube banned them from posting new videos and live streaming on YouTube for a week after violating the platforms TOS with regard to COVID.

3:15.0

And ironically, just last month, the chief executive of YouTube, Susan Wojcicki, reiterated YouTube's commitment to free speech as a, quote, core value of the company and that their TOS was fully consistent with that value.

3:29.0

So needless to say, Russia is not buying it. And as of today, the government is threatening to ban YouTube outright unless the channels are reinstated.

3:39.0

Now, this is not the first run-in that YouTube has had with the Russian government. I did a video a few months back on a Russian court ordering Google to restore the YouTube channel of the conservative Russian Orthodox TV outlet known as Tsargrad.

3:55.0

Now, back in July of last year, YouTube permanently blocked the Tsargrad channel, citing one of the strangest excuses imaginable.

4:05.0

They apparently said that Tsargrad couldn't have a channel because the US government was sanctioning the network's founder, the Russian billionaire and conservative Christian activists, Constantine Malafive, for his supposed role in financing pro-Russian separatists in Eastern Ukraine.

4:23.0

And so, supposedly because of its ties with Malafive, Google permanently disabled Tsargrad's account, citing what they called the violation of export laws.

4:35.0

So needless to say, Tsargrad network did not take that lying down. They sued Google. They took them to Russian court and the Russian court found in their favor. They won their case.

4:47.0

The court determined that they were on fairly de-platform and ordered Google to restore their YouTube account immediately or begin facing massive fines.

4:59.0
