from weekly facts based journey through the cosmos where we help you understand not only what we know but how we know what we know. I'm Fraser Kane. I'm the publisher of university with me as Dr. Pamela gay senior scientist for the planetary science institute and the director of cosmocost. Hey Pamela, how you doing? I am doing well. I am so excited about this episode. Mostly because do you have a naming scheme for your computers? No, there's like no history of like

1:26.6

no, I just go with the default name that Microsoft wants to give my computers or or so like Fraser's MacBook 003 things like that. That is so so sad. I do name my Wi-Fi. So my Wi-Fi is called universe and then I have another one called multiverse. Okay. And one other one called cosmos is the multiverse a a network that spans multiple.

1:55.6

No points. No, no, that would have. No, no, that would have been cool, but no, no, it's it's just I needed three different networks at some point.

2:07.6

So, no, no, but you I'm assuming your computer is mythological beasts or something. I do and I've had sticks and serbius and moneda.

2:22.6

And they they are almost all named after either a Valkyrie or God or a river or something that has to do with the underworld.

2:33.6

And and this all started with my first computer in grad school that was named strider after the character from Lord of the Rings where in the BBC audio drama they prefer to airgorn as strider almost the entire time.

2:49.6

And I came home from the observatory. I'd been listening to the BBC radio drama while driving for eight hours and thus came strider and the username I have to this day.

3:02.6

Right. You have to explain this every time like it's like you're constantly having to explain what star strider means, which is which I think which I find endlessly hilarious.

3:14.6

Like I think if you're going to like I never use a screen name. I'm always just my name Fraser Fraser Kane FK.

3:23.6

My last name isn't gay. You should be proud of it. You should be loud and proud of having a last name gay.

3:30.6

My my S.I.U.E email address assigned by the university was P.Gay and I couldn't email anyone on either the UK or the New Zealand academic.

3:42.6

I even system because it was considered I was I was blacklisted because of the word gay being in my username.

3:53.6

I yeah it's still a problem and then there's that hole you can't say gay and Florida thing and I want to be able to communicate with teachers and academics.

4:03.6

I think you got some kind of loo care. Yeah. The software does not care.

4:09.6

Well we did it. We made it to episode 666 and a spacious number to be sure what can we do to celebrate this accomplishment an episode all about the things in the universe that have been named after mythological people in places in the underworld.

4:25.6

All right. You've been preparing. You're excited. I so before we really dive into the place that have been named after things in the underworld.

4:35.6

Why do things have mythological names anyway? History. I this is where we started the the Greeks and Romans and also the various peoples of the Middle East were among the first to record extensive catalogs of all the constellations of the stars.

5:00.6

And we see the cultural links left in the names that we have today and with mercury Venus Mars Jupiter Saturn.

5:13.6

These were the first worlds that we watched wonder I wasn't there you weren't there the humans watched wonder among the stars that's where the word planet comes from is wanderer. And so it was seen that these were gods wandering among the stars and the stars are often associated with stories.

5:37.6

And Ramada for instance comes from a mythological story where a woman whose mother Cassiopia claimed that she was more beautiful than the goddess Athena.
