Summary

The desire to become the most you can be. That's the definition of self actualization. It's a battle between your base instincts and your higher aspirations. Self actualization means you are on a journey toward perfection. It's all about that journey. You accept you as you are and others as they are. The best way to sum it up is that self actualized individuals have aspirations of being their best, live in the moment, and accept everyone. "Be yourself, everyone else is already taken." - Oscar Wilde

1:45.4

The term was made famous by Abraham Maslow. Maybe you've heard of Maslow's hierarchy of needs pyramid. You know, what's interesting is that self-actualization is actually at the top of that pyramid.

1:55.5

So here's the definition of self-actualization. It's the desire to become the most that you can be. Now, according to Maslow, and I'm paraphrasing a little here, the final step to having all of our needs met, once we have, of course, the basics of food safety and friendship, is to come to terms with ourselves on issues like our morality, our creativity, our spontaneity, problem solving, having a lack of prejudice and accepting the facts.

2:23.1

Now, when you're in conflict with yourself or with society, what you'll find is the opposite of these, you know, like being immoral, unproductive, problem-focused, prejudiced, or just ignoring the facts. So again, being self-actualized is embracing the idea of becoming your best self.

They also have a sense of spontaneity and aren't afraid to live in the moment. Self-actualized people often dedicate themselves to a higher mission or cause because they see a bigger picture.

3:04.6

Now, as you may have guessed, becoming self-actualized is actually a bit of a spiritual journey. It's a spiritual battle of your base forces against your higher forces.

3:13.5

So how do you become self-actualized? Well, first, there's no destination with this. And it's also not about perfection or attainment. It's a journey. It's a lifelong journey. I'm becoming better every day.

3:24.7

Now, I like to consider myself self-actualized only because I'm working at it every day.

Now, second, and this is huge, practice acceptance, accept people as they are, accept situations as they come up, accept the unknown.

Third, is lives spontaneously, really strive to enjoy each moment as it comes, especially the unexpected moments. The ones maybe you hadn't counted on.
