Summary

What can your rabbi possibly add to all the Niagara-like cascade of conversation on corona virus? I’m not a doctor, so what can I possibly say that would meaningfully add to the diarrhea-like deluge of drivel clogging the Internet. Well, let’s really creep into the core of corona, using not only education and intelligence but also wisdom. Let’s dive to the depths of the disease. What does the Golden Calf of the Book of Exodus have to do with corona? Let’s start with the difference between education, intelligence and wisdom. When you think intelligence, think the notorious Leopold-Loeb murder of 1924. Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes spoke about shouting “Fire!” in a crowded theater. What he meant was that if you were in that theater, you were in far more danger of being trampled to death than by being incinerated. What is driving the current fear, panic, & hysteria about Corona? Who exactly is yelling “Fire!” and why? Remember the fear and panic about Y2K in November 1999? None of the terrors actually materialized. Remember the hysteria about the swine flu “pandemic” in 2009 and the Ebola hysteria in 2014? No? Oh, that’s right, there wasn’t any! Know why? Because the name of the president at the time started with an “O” not a “T”. Talking of O, remember his war on “for-profit” universities? Socialism spurns education for profit and all else for profit. Even medicine. Especially medicine must be governmental. Which brings us all the way back to the corona crisis. 0:29.0	I was not going to talk about the coronavirus because in general, as you know, I prefer discussing things of timeless application.
0:42.3	And in a short space of time, the coronavirus will be gone. It'll be dealt with. It'll become history.
0:50.9	It'll be like swine flu and SARS virus and Ebola and all of those things
0:58.1	that at the time were said were going to cause hundreds of thousands of deaths and huge dislocation.
1:06.4	Trouble is that the coronavirus will continue to be spoken about for a long time, not because of any
1:16.4	unique qualities of the virus or the way its RNA works or the way it clings to a host molecule. No, not any of those things. It's not that those
1:32.4	things aren't interesting. I did find it fairly interesting myself to know that a virus is
1:40.6	incapable of reproduction by itself. It can't increase. But the only way it does that is by
1:46.9	hijacking a host cell and it uses the host cell in somebody's body. That host cell has what we
1:57.8	could think of as machinery, the machinery of the molecule.
2:04.7	And that will do the reproducing for the virus.
2:08.5	And our immune system obviously fights it every step of the way, but sometimes the immune
2:15.1	system loses and the virus wins. And when that happens, it duplicates and releases its offspring and they can eventually damage and destroy the cell.
2:28.4	And if too many cells are destroyed by the multiplying particles, then you have problematic health consequences.
2:38.0	And so, yeah, all of that is certainly very interesting, but it's not what's causing the problem here.
2:47.0	What's causing the dislocation in your life. and this is true pretty much wherever you live,
2:55.5	is not so much the actual health consequences, as much as it is the consequences of fear,
3:05.2	panic, and hysteria. And so I thought, yes, I do need to address the coronavirus on this show,
