Summary

We’re breaking down the practical virtues of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience in today’s episode. Kelly shares transparently about her own failings and how impossible these virtues are when we rely on our own strength. Kelly also points out Paul’s secret to the virtues—you’re dearly loved, chosen, and set apart because of Christ. So often we have this turned around—thinking that if we can do a better job of displaying the character of Christ then God will accept us, choose us, and love us more. How freeing it is to see what Paul actually writes in Colossians 3:12: Because you are chosen, holy, and dearly loved, you get to wear the virtues of Christ. For today's episode, we're going to be looking at five virtues that the Apostle Paul told the Church of Colossi to put on.

1:07.2

Now for the first several weeks of this Cultivate podcast, we've been jumping back and forth between

1:13.0

the Old Testament and the New Testament. We've looked at a lot of narratives because I personally,

1:19.2

I just love narratives. And so we've spent some time looking at different characters in the Old

1:24.3

Testament and then some time in the Gospels, but we haven't yet

1:28.1

gotten to one of the epistles. So today's going to be an opportunity for us to open up the

1:35.0

letter of Colossians or the book of Colossians, which Paul wrote to the church at Colossi.

1:40.5

It's going to be really practical for us because Paul is going to tell us to put on

1:45.5

compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

1:51.2

If you're like me, you have struggled with those at different times in your life,

1:57.0

and sometimes I've struggled with all five, I think, at the same time, because these

2:02.4

virtues are all relationship-centric. If we're by ourselves, we don't really need these virtues,

2:10.3

but as soon as we start involving other people, we need the virtues. I wrote a book on this

a few years ago called The Fitting Room and a woman

wrote to me and I love this. It's one of my favorite quotes that I've ever received and she said,

I think I have plenty of each of the virtues when I don't need them. It's only when I'm in the
