Nancy Maddox loved more than anything, her children and her Bible.

Nancy had been born and raised in the Kentucky backwoods, and she'd been brought up to believe

that every word of the Bible was the literal truth.

She lived a good and virtuous life in the servitude of the Lord.

She went to church every Sunday and read her Bible every day.

And more importantly, the lessons she learned in those pages she taught to her own children,

which made it all the more perplexing to her

why her daughter Kathleen seemed to be headed on a pathway towards sin

and damnation.

For a time at least it seemed she'd been truly blessed. She and her husband Charlie had been spared the worst of the depression.

And in 1930 they'd actually managed to save Charlie had a good job working the worst of the depression.
