Summary

Self-Incompatibility is a means by which some plants prevent self-fertilization and promotes outcrossing. It has evolved independently in many different groups and plays a very important role in the ecology, evolution, and conservation of different species. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Grace Burgin to explore the multitude of ways she is trying to understand self-incompatibility in the genus Phlox. Join us for a fascinating deep dive into what it takes to understand this phenomenon in Phlox. How is everyone doing this week? I have a really

interesting topic for you today because it involves major mechanisms in the world of pollination

1:00.2

and evolution in plants. We are talking about the world of self- incompatibility in the genus flocks.

1:06.6

Now, self-incompatibility is pretty much what it sounds like. If pollen from that individual

1:10.9

or a genetically related individual falls on the stigma of that individual, there are mechanisms

1:16.5

for plants to reject that pollen. It helps increase outcrossing and genetic diversity, but we still

have so much to learn about it, and it's absolutely fascinating. Joining us to talk about this is Dr. Grace Bergen,

who takes a close look at self-incompatibility in flocks,
