Summary

Go looking for information on rare plant population health and it can be surprisingly hard to come by. Plant monitoring, especially over the long term, is a challenge and data have not always kept up with the need. Dr. Michelle DePrenger-Levin and her colleagues at the Denver Botanic Gardens are doing their part to fix this and using some cool technology in the process. Join us as we discuss how drones are helping plant monitoring and conservation efforts. Hello everyone and welcome to the Indefensive Plants podcast, the official podcast of indefensiveplants.com. What's up? This is your host, Matt. Welcome to the show. How is everyone

doing this week? Today we are talking about the importance of monitoring plant populations,

0:46.5

especially the rare species. When you go looking for data, you realize how little we know

0:51.0

about some of the rarest plants, especially how their populations are doing

0:54.6

over the long term. Are they increasing? Are they decreasing? Are we just not detecting

trends because we don't have enough years' worth of data? Well, these are the kinds of questions

that my guest today is trying to solve. Joining us is Dr. Michelle DePringer Levin from the Denver

Botanic Gardens, and she's here to talk to us about all of the

1:11.7

really cool work she and her colleagues are doing to monitor rare plants, particularly a really

neat little species of Feselia called Feselia Samudica, and they're doing it with drones.

I love drone technology when it's applied to things like conservation, and I can't wait for you
