Summary

Guest Info/Bio: This week we try to redeem ourselves from our infamous Rob Bell “fanboy” episode and are somewhat successful! We had the pleasure of recording live with Rob in Dayton, Ohio on the last top of his bookstore tour. Rob had a lot of great stuff to say about his brand new bestselling book, “What is the Bible?: How an Ancient Library of Poems, Letters, and Stories Can Transform the Way You Think and Feel About Everything.” We dive into how we read the bible, how it’s still relevant today, and it continues to evolve. Rob Bell is The New York Times bestselling author of Love Wins, What We Talk About When We Talk about God, The Zimzum of Love and How To Be Here. iTunes named his podcast, The RobCast, Best of 2015. He’s been profiled in The New Yorker, he’s toured with Oprah on her Life You Want Tour, and in 2011 Time Magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. He has a regular show at Largo, the legendary music and comedy club in West Hollywood and is currently touring to support his latest book, “What is the Bible?:How an Ancient Library of Poems, Letters, and Stories Can Transform the Way You Think and Feel About Everything.” Guest Publications: “Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith; Sex God: Exploring The Endless Connections Between Sexuality and Spirituality; Jesus Wants to Save Christians: Learning to Read a Dangerous Book; Drops Like Stars: A Few Thoughts on Creativity & Suffering; Love Wins: A Book About Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived; What We Talk about When We Talk about God; The Zimzum of Love: A New Way of Understanding Marriage; How To Be Here; Millones Cajones; and What is The Bible?: How an Ancient Library of Poems, Letters, and Stories Can Transform the Way You Think and Feel About Everything.” Guest Website/Social Media: www.robbell.com Twitter: @realrobbell Instagram: @realrobbell Facebook: @realrobbell iTunes: The RobCast Special guest music on this episode provided by: Civil Twilight Facebook: @CivilTwilight Twitter: @civiltwilight Instagram: @civiltwilight Enjoy the songs? And so what's interesting is oftentimes, especially our modern, sophisticated, educated

0:04.6

friends who reject the Bible, affirm evolution biologically and then deny it developmentally.

0:13.6

So they will say, yeah, of course evolution. Obviously, the whole thing is unfolding and adapting

0:18.7

and certain things survive and certain things don't.

0:21.6

But then they turn around and read the Bible like a static, fixed book.

0:27.5

But if you read this book as, of course, earlier people, early in the story, had understandings we don't.

0:35.8

And actually, you saying it's barbaric and primitive, which it is, I join you in condemning that,

0:42.3

how are you here?

0:44.6

How do you have this ranking and hierarchy?

0:47.6

And when people say, well, it never condemned slavery, but you do.

0:51.8

So how is it that something happened in human history that you want nothing to do with

1:00.0

slavery? And did that movement just happen with you or has it been unfolding through all of the

1:06.3

human story? In which case, the Bible shows you what that unfolding looks like. You just happen to be

1:12.0

a little farther down the road when it comes to slavery or women's rights, but you also have

1:18.7

a massive carbon footprint and are part of an industrial society that actually might be ruining

1:23.4

the earth for good. So in all the ways that you are also, you are way farther ahead,

1:29.3

do you love your neighbor? That's from Leviticus. Any way in which you would say, I'm not always the

1:33.2

most loving neighbor, then actually Leviticus was farther ahead. So to make it just this clean

1:39.5

line, you can't do that either.

1:40.8

Just let it go. you can't do that either.
