Summary

Children have always been bringing their girlfriends and boyfriends to family gatherings. Some things are true for all times and all places. Travel and transport is an eternal human reality. Always has been and always will be. Everywhere. People in the past may not have had Concorde airliners, Cadillacs or canoes, but they did have camels. And that is exactly what the camel represents throughout the Hebrew Bible. Money is another timeless truth. Maybe not checks and certificates of deposit, but some form of abstract representation of wealth has always been central to the human condition. 0:55.9	I was recently asked whether money is something recent or, to quote the person who asked me
1:05.5	this during a radio interview, whether the writers of the Bible knew anything at all about money.
1:14.2	And the answer is, yes, as a matter of fact, it is not hard to see that the Old Testament,
1:24.1	starting with the book of Genesis, has more rules, rituals, and regulations
1:31.7	surrounding money than almost anything else.
1:36.6	So did they have credit cards?
1:39.1	Of course not.
1:39.9	Did they have checks?
1:41.1	Probably not.
1:42.0	But did they have abstract representations of value? Absolutely. Did they have ways of transferring goods and activities and services among one another.
2:01.9	Yes, of course they did.
2:04.4	Whether or not we know the exact details is irrelevant.
2:08.5	But in exactly the same way that they had concerns then about raising children or relating to parents and siblings is without doubt.
2:24.4	Of course they had those concerns then, and they're not that different from the concerns we have now.
2:30.9	And similarly, with money.
2:33.4	Yes, of course they had money then.
