Summary

Bark beetles may be small, but they can have major impacts on forests around the globe. It may be easy to think of these insects as always a bad thing, but what if they aren't? Simple stories rarely apply in ecology and nowhere is that more apparent than in the work of scientists like Dr. Seth Davis. Join is as we take dive into the complex relationships between bark beetles, trees, and forest ecology. This episode was produced in part by Robert, Thomas, Valerie, Joan, Mohsin Kazmi Photography, Cathy, Simon, Nick, Paul, Charis, EJ, Laura, Sung, NOK, Stephen, Heidi, Kristin, Luke, Sea, Shannon, Thomas, Will, Jamie, Waverly, Brent, Tanner, Rick, Kazys, Dorothy, Katherine, Emily, Theo, Nichole, Paul, Karen, Randi, Caelan, Tom, Don, Susan, Corbin, Keena, Robin, Peter, Whitney, Kenned, Margaret, Daniel, Karen, David, Earl, Jocelyn, Gary, Krysta, Elizabeth, Southern California Carnivorous Plant Enthusiasts, Pattypollinators, Peter, Judson, Ella, Alex, Dan, Pamela, Peter, Andrea, Nathan, Karyn, Michelle, Jillian, Chellie, Linda, Laura, Miz Holly, Christie, Carlos, Paleo Fern, Levi, Sylvia, Lanny, Ben, Lily, Craig, Sarah, Lor, Monika, Brandon, Jeremy, Suzanne, Kristina, Christine, Silas, Michael, Aristia, Felicidad, Lauren, Danielle, Allie, Jeffrey, Amanda, Tommy, Marcel, C Leigh, Karma, Shelby, Christopher, Alvin, Arek, Chellie, Dani, Paul, Dani, Tara, Elly, Colleen, Natalie, Nathan, Ario, Laura, Cari, Margaret, Mary, Connor, Nathan, Jan, Jerome, Brian, Azomonas, Ellie, University Greens, Joseph, Melody, Patricia, Matthew, Garrett, John, Ashley, Cathrine, Melvin, OrangeJulian, Porter, Jules, Griff, Joan, Megan, Marabeth, Les, Ali, Southside Plants, Keiko, Robert, Bryce, Wilma, Amanda, Helen, Mikey, Michelle, German, Joerg, Cathy, Tate, Steve, Kae, Carole, Mr. Keith Santner, Lynn, Aaron, Sara, Kenned, Brett, Jocelyn, Ethan, Sheryl, Runaway Goldfish, Ryan, Chris, Alana, Rachel, Joanna, Lori, Paul, Griff, Matthew, Bobby, Vaibhav, Steven, Joseph, Brandon, Liam, Hall, Jared, Brandon, Christina, Carly, Kazys, Stephen, Katherine, Manny, doeg, Daniel, Tim, Philip, Tim, Lisa, Brodie, Bendix, Irene, holly, Sara, and Margie.

What's up? This is your host Matt. Welcome to the show. How is everyone doing this week?

I have an excellent show coming to you today because it's about bark beetles and tree death and the ecological

consequences of where those two worlds intersect. But conversations like this can't

Joining me to talk about this is Dr Seth Davis who is trying to understand a really complex system and what it means for the future of our forests.

It is not the straightforward story you're probably telling yourself already inside your head so I don't want to keep you from this

conversation any longer. Let's expand our minds with some nuance on Bark Beatles.

Without further ado here's my conversation with Dr Seth Davis. I hope you enjoy. All right, Dr. Seth Davis, welcome to the podcast. I am excited to have you on and talk about your area of study but for those that aren't familiar with your work

1:24.4

let's start off with an introduction tell everyone a little bit about who you are and what it is you do

1:29.0

Sure so my name's Seth Davis and I'm a professor of forest entomology at Colorado State University.

1:35.9

We're basically an entomology group so we focus on things like plant insect interactions.

1:46.9

A lot of that has to do with bark beetles and insects that attack damage and kill like trees or plants, sometimes agricultural crops.

1:55.0

And lately we've been also doing a lot of research on bees.

1:58.4

Awesome.
