On February 24, 1978, five young men from Yuba City, California, attended a college basketball game at California State University, Chico. Following the game around 10 PM, they drove home in a Mercury Montego, but they never made it back. Just days later, the car was found abandoned in a remote area of the Plumas National Forest. Four of the men's bodies were later found in the forest, some more than 20 miles from the car. But the fifth man, Gary Mathias, has never been found even to this day.
The cause of the men's deaths is not fully known. Some theories include an accidental death in the forest, a carjacking, or even a homicide. The case remains unsolved, and is considered to be one of the most baffling in California history. Leaving everyone with the same question, what really happened in those woods?
