Summary

"As deer hunters, are we doing more harm than good in the way we talk about our sport?" If you've ever said this yourself or heard others say it and got to wondering - "What really made that a nice buck?" This is the podcast for you. Mark, Jimmy and Erik dive in on the tricky topics of trophy hunting, naming deer, scoring bucks, the context (or lack thereof) that we put on social media as hunters, an interesting letter we received from an anti-hunting 3rd grader, killing a buck that someone else had history with and a ton more. The point of this episode is not to say that our opinion is 100% correct or that we hold all the answers by any means, but rather to shed light on a great deal of the behind-the-scenes work and respect for wildlife that goes into each and every hunt for those who are not as familiar with our sport. As hunters, we can always work to improve our messaging to the public, especially in this day and age of social media, to properly give our highly complex and incredibly vital pastime and role in conservation its full justice. What are your thoughts on the matter? We'd love to hear from you after listening to this episode! As always - let us know if there are any topics you'd like covered on the Vortex Nation podcast by asking us on any one of our social media platforms and using #VortexNationPodcast.

0:30.0

But then you wondered to yourself, what was it that caused me to just say that that is a nice buck?

0:36.9

I think we all know in our heads probably what it was about that, about that buck that made you say that. But deep down if you wondered kind of beyond the level of well I had a big rack. If you wondered all right how did that become the qualification for a nice buck and this is the podcast for you.

We've, Mark, we should probably stop having a lot of conversations prior to

0:59.6

podcast because naturally I think we've done this a fair amount of times we say what we were talking about this just before the podcast and

1:05.9

Darn it. We weren't hit record. We didn't have the headsets on this could kind of go in a number of different directions really we don't have a set direction just yet

1:13.9

but that's kind of the idea for this we're talking about the thought process around

1:20.8

dear you know these days and how it's evolved and hunters' thoughts around deer and

1:26.8

how that's evolved over time and where we're at now.

1:29.4

Yeah. Is it good? Is it bad? Is it, is it neither? Is it normal? Is it normal? Yeah. So I think how does this all end up starting out?

1:38.2

Deer naming?

1:39.2

Deer naming? Yeah. Explain deer naming for those not familiar.

1:43.0

Cuz your naming could sound really strange if somebody's not a deer hunter.

1:46.2

We were talking about what our thoughts were about naming deer and like deer hunters, white tail hunters are the group that they'll have a deer.

1:56.4

They may or may not have years of so-called history with that deer.

2:01.6

Yeah, air quotes, and history is through sightings, trail cameras, you know, encounters, maybe they find a shed and then over the years that deer now is devil brows or it has a name you know right right so it's

2:18.6

acquired like humans have given it yeah a, a name. Yeah, and then you kill it.

2:24.8

Oftentimes based on a specific attribute,

2:28.4

which you know helps, you know, qualify or, you know, if Eric and I are communicating about a specific deer which neither of us I think are

2:37.0

lucky enough to have super really cool properties that we can manage and ultimately
