I am still just in the very early stages of starting to outline the third book in my Dreamlander

trilogy. I've come to think of my outlining process as

brainstorming on the page. The early part of the process is very much a stream of consciousness

experience. I'll use a pen and paper and just talk to myself

on the page asking lots of questions and trying to reason my way through the problems and

plot holes until at some point my entire sense of the story starts to emerge.

Of course, since this is the third and final book in the series, I already have some pretty solid notions about where the story and the

characters are going. But I also find myself with lots of questions to answer, lots of cool stuff

I teased in the first and second books that now have to get paid off suitably in this third book.

The early portions of my outlines are always where the heaviest lifting happens.

Before I get to the really fun stuff of playing

with my characters, I'm first working on framing the overall conflict with realistic

backstories, in this case millennia old, backstories, and antagonistic

motivations. I want to make sure I get the broad foundations of the conflict in place

before I start digging really deep with the specifics of my

character's personal journeys.
