A knock on my office door was soft, almost apologetic.

So when I mumbled, come in, I was ready for something delicate and about as self-effacing as Uriah heap.

But when the door swung open, I knew exactly how wrong I could be.

The gentleman was maybe 40, gray at the temples with shaggy eyebrows and a military mustache, and built like a heavy cruiser with a pair of catchers mitts for hands. I'm Elliot Flory, Mr. Marlowe, Mr. Ira Bjornson's secretary. Are your services available, sir? That all depends on what you and Mr. Bionson want me to do, Flory. What's the job? Specifically, sir, to catch a thief.

May I sit down there? Of course. Thank you. Mr. Bionson is being robbed systematically of diamonds. Are they disappearing from Mr. Tory owns, or is somebody robbing his wife? No, no, no, Mr. Maller. You see, sir, Mr. Bionson owns and operates the Bionson mines, a relatively new but important deposit of Kimberlite Pipe.
