Summary

In this episode, we share what's happening with a recent attempt from many bird lovers to try and shut down fishing at one of the most popular fishing piers in the state.

As you'll hear in this episode, this is NOT an "us vs. them" - we all need to work together to ensure that anglers can keep fishing and that birds can keep living. We also firmly believe that shutting down a fishing pier from fishing is NOT the solution... that only moves the problem to a new area.

If you boil it down to a single problem is that there isn't enough education for fishermen on what to do (and what NEVER to do) when it comes to fishing around birds.

Moreover, we go into the steps to safely releasing a bird if you ever do hook into one.

Enjoy and tight lines.

Holy smokes guys. Have you seen this new 4K satellite imagery in the smart fishing spots app?

0:05.9

It is next level. It makes Google satellite maps look like a complete joke.

0:10.7

I can't even use them anymore after seeing this. It's probably why some of these companies are charging hundreds if not thousands of dollars to get the same access to be able to see your fishing spots in this 4K level.

0:22.7

It lets you see all kinds of new hidden areas, new potholes, new seagrass, new oyster bars, stuff that you would never ever see on a normal Google satellite map.

Hello, saltstrong nation, Joe Simons. Like Diamonds. We are back talking about somewhat sensitive subject. And yes, if you read the headline talking about the Skyway fishing pier potentially being shut down for fishing, I understand the irony is the word fishing pier is in there for really one main reason.

1:58.0

And that is birds. And this podcast, I'm going to go right off the bat and say this is not about, you know, poking either party or trying to say we're right, they're right, meaning the friends of Pelicans and birds.

2:11.5

This is about really bad education. This whole thing has happened because of really some sloppiness on the part of a lot of English. There's also some other issues that we'll talk about in terms of the birds.

2:24.4

But in a day, if you take everything back to kind of where it started, it's from a lot of fishermen, especially some beginner fisherman, which we love to help and we got Captain Dillon on here who loves to help because obviously when people are fishing and enjoying it and having fun, they want to do it more.

2:40.6

They tell the friends about like other families and they're hiring coverage greener. They're joining saltstrong. It helps everyone. For the same point, we have to protect our everything from our landmarks to our fishing peers, to the birds, to the manatees,

2:53.8

to everything in the water. And we've seen some pretty bad things out there from people cutting lines, Dillon gets to see it there and John's passed sometimes when someone hooks a bird and cuts a line. I mean, that that's basically just giving it a death sentence for the most part.

3:11.6

So there's a lot of things never to do. We're going to talk about that. We're all just going to pull up a couple of little PDFs that FWCs put together on the right way to do it because it will happen.

3:20.7

If you fish enough, you will at some point hook a bird regardless if it's a pelican or not. But a lot of this is happening on places like this guy way fishing peer, which is why it's getting a lot of attention.

3:31.6

And there are some really amazing people out there. I've watched quite a few videos here this morning that are giving their time. Like they're not paid to do this or volunteering to go save the pelicans that fishermen are hooking.

3:43.8

So we have to be mindful of that. And we have to open our eyes to that and say, all right, there really is a problem here. Let's all work together. If you guys are watching, I'm doing it together thing, you know, let's all work together to make this this work.

3:57.1

And I don't I don't think the for the most part, the bird side of this, like, I don't think they just came in day once. Hey, let's end fishing once and for all it was just after seeing so many birds die over and over again.

4:10.6

And so many birds getting hurt and mistreated and in some cases tortured that that this come to this. So this is all about starting day one, having an open conversation, talking about education.
