Today we'll be telling the story of St. Leo the Great, also known as Pope Leo the First,

whose feast is celebrated on November 10th. Not much is known

about his early life, but scholars believe he was born around the year 400 in what is now

Tuscany, Italy. By the time he was in his 30s he was very well known and when Pope

6thus the third died in the year 440 Leo was unanimously elected by the people as

his successor. Pope Leo the Great had to deal with a lot of different groups of Christians, and as a result really

focused on emphasizing the importance of the papacy.

He strove to unify the church under the chair of St. Peter.

He is also well known for his role in the Council of Chalcedon, the fourth

Ecumenical Council, which made clear that Jesus is two natures,

divine and human, united in one person, with neither confusion nor division.

Leah was named a doctor of the church by Pope Benedict the 14th in 1754, and over a hundred of his sermons and 150 of his letters have still been
