Christian Carl Gerhardt's writer grew up in the small Bavarian town of Bergen.

At a young age, he showed an early tendency for fakery.

A childhood friend remembered that in his early teens, Christian prank called a government office. He said he was a millionaire

from Holland and that he wanted to register his two Rolls Royces. Despite being only 13 years old at the

time, the clerk believed him. His friend said he played this role perfectly. When Christian was 17,

he moved to America. He had met an American couple on a train trip.
