Hello, everyone, and welcome to the Indefensive Plants podcast, the official podcast of

What's up?

0:05.7

This is your host, Matt.

0:06.5

Welcome to the show.

0:07.4

How is everyone doing this week?

0:09.3

I am doing great.

0:10.4

We are going way back, way, way back into the history of this podcast to bring to light

0:15.5

an episode that happened in 2015.

0:17.5

It was the eighth ever episode of this podcast, but the topic is as relevant today

0:23.4

as it was back then. And it holds a special place in my heart because Dr. Mary Bisson,

0:28.5

who I interviewed for this subject, was the first professor I ever took a true botany class

0:33.6

from. So she really helped set the stage for my love of plants. And of course, that led to

0:39.0

indefensive plants. So thank you to Dr. Bisson. And let's learn what she has to say, because she

0:43.6

studies a unique photosynthetic organism called Kara. I think technically it is considered an algae,

0:49.4

but when scientists looked at it genetically, it is more closely related to plants than it is algae. And it's

0:55.4

fascinating. And Dr. Bisson's career has been looking at this plant as sort of a model organism.

1:00.7

I'm going to let her describe why that is and what is so special about this wonderful genus.

1:06.2

Before I get to that, I just want to say, this podcast would never have been possible without

1:10.0

people to support it. And there's a lot of great ways of doing that. One of the best ways is to become a patron over at Patreon.com slash In Defensive Plants, where you can get kickpacks for a little financial contribution each month. I couldn't be doing this without my patron. So a big thank you goes out to them. But that is entirely enough for me. I don't want to keep you from this episode any longer. Let's jump back into the wonderful world of Kara and learn why it is being used

1:32.4

as a model organism. So without further ado, here's my conversation with Dr. Mary Bisson. I hope you

1:37.6

enjoy. Every Saturday we had an eight-hour lab, and it was in the field.
