And so I said to Mr. Gardner, sightseeing is all very well, and I do like to do a place thoroughly,

but after all, we've done England pretty well, and all I want now is to get some quiet spot

by the seaside and just relax. That's what I said, isn't it, Odell? Yes, darling. It is not often

that I expose myself to the perils of the English summer holiday, the uncertainty of the weather, the discomfort of the hotels, and the cuisine.

Ah, ma foi, the cuisine.

But for once in my life, I had allowed myself to be tempted.

The jolly Roger Hotel on Smuggler's Island of the south coast of Devon was, I had been assured, the exception.

A positive paragon among hotels.

What I like about this place is that it is so, um, team, if you know what I mean.

And so private, isn't that so, Miss Brewster?

Quite right, Mrs. Gardner. No sherrybangs, no day-trippers.

And being such a small place, we can all talk to one another, and everybody knows everybody else.

Mr. Kelso told us that the most interesting people came here, and he was right.
