Summary

What makes some plants invasive? This is an extremely complex question with many possible answers, but that hasn't stopped Dr. Kali Mattingly from tackling a piece of the puzzle. From leaf, root, and flower traits to DNA and hybridization, Dr. Mattingly has tackled this work in a variety of ways. Join us as we discuss what she has learned from looking at invasive plants such as lesser celandine (Ficaria verna) and purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria). This episode was produced in part by Jamie, Brent, Tanner, Rick, Kazys, Dorothy, Katherine, Emily, Theo, Nichole, Paul, Karen, Randi, Caelan, Tom, Don, Susan, Corbin, Keena, Robin, Peter, Whitney, Kenned, Margaret, Daniel, Karen, David, Earl, Jocelyn, Gary, Krysta, Elizabeth, Southern California Carnivorous Plant Enthusiasts, Pattypollinators, Peter, Judson, Ella, Alex, Dan, Pamela, Peter, Andrea, Nathan, Karyn, Michelle, Jillian, Chellie, Linda, Laura, Miz Holly, Christie, Carlos, Paleo Fern, Levi, Sylvia, Lanny, Ben, Lily, Craig, Sarah, Lor, Monika, Brandon, Jeremy, Suzanne, Kristina, Christine, Silas, Michael, Aristia, Felicidad, Lauren, Danielle, Allie, Jeffrey, Amanda, Tommy, Marcel, C Leigh, Karma, Shelby, Christopher, Alvin, Arek, Chellie, Dani, Paul, Dani, Tara, Elly, Colleen, Natalie, Nathan, Ario, Laura, Cari, Margaret, Mary, Connor, Nathan, Jan, Jerome, Brian, Azomonas, Ellie, University Greens, Joseph, Melody, Patricia, Matthew, Garrett, John, Ashley, Cathrine, Melvin, OrangeJulian, Porter, Jules, Griff, Joan, Megan, Marabeth, Les, Ali, Southside Plants, Keiko, Robert, Bryce, Wilma, Amanda, Helen, Mikey, Michelle, German, Joerg, Cathy, Tate, Steve, Kae, Carole, Mr. Keith Santner, Lynn, Aaron, Sara, Kenned, Brett, Jocelyn, Ethan, Sheryl, Runaway Goldfish, Ryan, Chris, Alana, Rachel, Joanna, Lori, Paul, Griff, Matthew, Bobby, Vaibhav, Steven, Joseph, Brandon, Liam, Hall, Jared, Brandon, Christina, Carly, Kazys, Stephen, Katherine, Mohsin Kazmi Takes Pictures, Manny, doeg, Daniel, Tim, Philip, Tim, Lisa, Brodie, Bendix, Irene, holly, Sara, and Margie.

Hello everyone and welcome to the Indefensive Plants podcast, the official podcast of

0:04.1

Indefensiveplants.com. What's up? This is your host, Matt. Welcome to the show. How is

0:07.9

everyone doing this week? Today we are diving into a very, very complex topic, and that is

0:13.5

invasive plant species. Now this isn't so much a value judgment. That's a topic for another time,

0:19.2

but today we are talking to Dr. Callie Mattingly,

0:21.6

who studies why some plants are able to become so invasive to the point where they're crowding

0:26.7

out and threatening the ecological health of native ecosystems. Dr. Mattingly takes a variety of

0:32.5

approaches to this, both ecological and genetic, but she brings a statistical background that makes everything she does

0:38.6

so much stronger. I'll let her describe all the details to you because it is absolutely fascinating

0:43.0

work, but before we get to that, I just want to say if you're enjoying this podcast and you want to

0:46.6

give it a future, please consider supporting us over at patreon.com slash indefensive plants.

For a little financial help each month, you get a lot of great kickbacks, but most importantly, you help keep the show up and running. I literally couldn't be doing this without the support of my patrons. So thank you to all of them. Once again, that's patreon.com slash indefensive plans. But that is entirely enough out of me. I don't want to keep you from this any longer, so let's just jump right into it. Without further ado, here's my conversation with Dr. Callie Maddingly.

1:13.5

I hope you enjoy.

1:31.3

All right, Dr. Callie Maddingly, welcome to the podcast. I am so excited to talk to you today, but let's start off with an introduction.

1:34.3

Tell everyone a little bit about who you are and what it is you do.

1:37.3

Sure.

1:38.3

Yeah.

1:39.3

Hi, my name is Callie Mattingly.

1:41.3

I finished my PhD about a year and a half ago now. I was studying the

1:47.2

evolution and ecology of invasive plants. Before that, I did a little bit of work looking at rare

1:53.2

plants as well. And now I'm a statistician contractor for the EPA. So I work for their great

2:00.3

lakes office and I consult with all the
