Summary

The hemlock woolly adelgid has devastated hemlock populations throughout eastern North America and climate change is only going to make things worse for native Tsuga species. Understanding how to combat such invasive pests is vitally important for species survival and ecosystem health. One fruitful avenue of research involves understanding the capacity for natural resistance in some hemlock trees. Join me and Ecologist Ian Kinahan as we discuss the ins and outs of woolly adelgid resistance and how it may offer a glimmer of hope for North America's hemlock trees. This episode was produced in part by Kazys, Dorothy, Katherine, Emily, Theo, Nichole, Paul, Karen, Randi, Caelan, Tom, Don, Susan, Corbin, Keena, Robin, Peter, Whitney, Kenned, Margaret, Daniel, Karen, David, Earl, Jocelyn, Gary, Krysta, Elizabeth, Southern California Carnivorous Plant Enthusiasts, Pattypollinators, Peter, Judson, Ella, Alex, Dan, Pamela, Peter, Andrea, Nathan, Karyn, Michelle, Jillian, Chellie, Linda, Laura, Miz Holly, Christie, Carlos, Paleo Fern, Levi, Sylvia, Lanny, Ben, Lily, Craig, Sarah, Lor, Monika, Brandon, Jeremy, Suzanne, Kristina, Christine, Silas, Michael, Aristia, Felicidad, Lauren, Danielle, Allie, Jeffrey, Amanda, Tommy, Marcel, C Leigh, Karma, Shelby, Christopher, Alvin, Arek, Chellie, Dani, Paul, Dani, Tara, Elly, Colleen, Natalie, Nathan, Ario, Laura, Cari, Margaret, Mary, Connor, Nathan, Jan, Jerome, Brian, Azomonas, Ellie, University Greens, Joseph, Melody, Patricia, Matthew, Garrett, John, Ashley, Cathrine, Melvin, OrangeJulian, Porter, Jules, Griff, Joan, Megan, Marabeth, Les, Ali, Southside Plants, Keiko, Robert, Bryce, Wilma, Amanda, Helen, Mikey, Michelle, German, Joerg, Cathy, Tate, Steve, Kae, Carole, Mr. Keith Santner, Lynn, Aaron, Sara, Kenned, Brett, Jocelyn, Ethan, Sheryl, Runaway Goldfish, Ryan, Chris, Alana, Rachel, Joanna, Lori, Paul, Griff, Matthew, Bobby, Vaibhav, Steven, Joseph, Brandon, Liam, Hall, Jared, Brandon, Christina, Carly, Kazys, Stephen, Katherine, Mohsin Kazmi Takes Pictures, Manny, doeg, Daniel, Tim, Philip, Tim, Lisa, Brodie, Bendix, Irene, holly, Sara, and Margie.

doing this week? Today we are talking about a really important conversation and yet again,

0:13.1

another one near and dear to my heart, and that is the conservation of the Eastern Hemlock,

0:17.7

Suga Canadensis, which has been absolutely ravaged by the invasive Wulia Delgid.

0:23.7

My guest today is Ian Kinnahan, who is very passionate and works on Hemlock resistance.

0:29.1

I'm going to let him describe what that is, but essentially it's working with genetic diversity

0:33.2

and a subset of trees' natural ability to resist this invasive pest.

0:41.0

This is a really important conversation, and as you're going to hear, there's strangely a lot more resistance to it than there actually should be.

0:44.2

And it's an important reminder that conservation can happen in a vacuum or a silo, and we need

0:48.8

multifaceted approaches to species conservation.

0:51.5

We just don't have the luxury to think about it any other way.

0:54.3

Before I get to that, I just want to say please consider supporting this podcast.

0:57.9

The best way to do that is by becoming a patron over at patreon.com slash indefensive plants.

1:02.6

There's some kickbacks in there for you for supporting the show, but it quite literally

1:05.9

helps ensure the show can keep going week after week. And of course, thank you to all of my patrons that

1:11.7

have supported it thus far. But that is entirely enough out of me. Let's get on to my conversation.

1:16.3

Without further ado, here's my conversation with Ian Kenahan, welcome to the podcast.

1:36.8

I am super pumped to pick your brain today.

1:38.7

But for those that aren't aware of your work, let's start off with an introduction.

1:42.0

Tell us a little bit about who you are and what it is you do.

1:45.1

Yeah, thanks, Matt. Really appreciate you having me on. So I am an ecologist with Massachusetts
