Summary
The links between plant taxonomy, evolution, geology, and conservation are not always obvious. It can be very difficult to seamlessly tie these worlds together in a meaningful way, but Botanical Curator of the Wertheim Conservatory Dr. Andre Naranjo has managed to do just that. The scrub mints (e.g. Conradina and Dicerandra) have provided him with an amazing window back in time that allows he and his colleagues to better understand the geologic history of the Florida peninsula, how endemic plants evolve, and why these concepts are vital when trying to conserve wild spaces and the species they support. This episode was produced in part by Dorothy, Katherine, Emily, Theo, Nichole, Paul, Karen, Randi, Caelan, Tom, Don, Susan, Corbin, Keena, Robin, Peter, Whitney, Kenned, Margaret, Daniel, Karen, David, Earl, Jocelyn, Gary, Krysta, Elizabeth, Southern California Carnivorous Plant Enthusiasts, Pattypollinators, Peter, Judson, Ella, Alex, Dan, Pamela, Peter, Andrea, Nathan, Karyn, Michelle, Jillian, Chellie, Linda, Laura, Miz Holly, Christie, Carlos, Paleo Fern, Levi, Sylvia, Lanny, Ben, Lily, Craig, Sarah, Lor, Monika, Brandon, Jeremy, Suzanne, Kristina, Christine, Silas, Michael, Aristia, Felicidad, Lauren, Danielle, Allie, Jeffrey, Amanda, Tommy, Marcel, C Leigh, Karma, Shelby, Christopher, Alvin, Arek, Chellie, Dani, Paul, Dani, Tara, Elly, Colleen, Natalie, Nathan, Ario, Laura, Cari, Margaret, Mary, Connor, Nathan, Jan, Jerome, Brian, Azomonas, Ellie, University Greens, Joseph, Melody, Patricia, Matthew, Garrett, John, Ashley, Cathrine, Melvin, OrangeJulian, Porter, Jules, Griff, Joan, Megan, Marabeth, Les, Ali, Southside Plants, Keiko, Robert, Bryce, Wilma, Amanda, Helen, Mikey, Michelle, German, Joerg, Cathy, Tate, Steve, Kae, Carole, Mr. Keith Santner, Lynn, Aaron, Sara, Kenned, Brett, Jocelyn, Ethan, Sheryl, Runaway Goldfish, Ryan, Chris, Alana, Rachel, Joanna, Lori, Paul, Griff, Matthew, Bobby, Vaibhav, Steven, Joseph, Brandon, Liam, Hall, Jared, Brandon, Christina, Carly, Kazys, Stephen, Katherine, Mohsin Kazmi Takes Pictures, Manny, doeg, Daniel, Tim, Philip, Tim, Lisa, Brodie, Bendix, Irene, holly, Sara, and Margie.

| 0:00.0 | Hello everyone and welcome to the Indefense of Plants podcast, the official podcast of Indefenseaplants.com. What's up? This is your host, Matt. Welcome to the show. How is everyone doing this week? Before we get to our episode, I just want to say, please consider supporting this podcast over at patreon.com slash indefensive plants. It's the only way I can make sure this show continues each and every week. So thank you to everyone who has contributed thus far. |
| 0:22.3 | I couldn't be doing this without my patrons. |
| 0:24.6 | But this week is a really, really interesting episode. |
| 0:28.4 | It's a story that touches on far more areas of science |
| 0:31.9 | than you would expect just hearing a surface-level pitch about it. |
| 0:35.9 | Joining us is Dr. Andre Naranjo, who is here to share his passion for the scrubments. |
| 0:41.6 | We're talking generos such as Dicerandra or Conradina. |
| 0:44.8 | If you're from the Southeast, these will be familiar genre to you. |
| 0:48.4 | But his story starts with taxonomy and tells an amazing tale about biogeography, deep time, evolution, endemism, |
| 0:56.7 | and especially conservation, and it all focuses on understanding how many of these weird, rare, |
| 1:02.8 | and endemic mints came to be. I'm going to let him tell the story because he is so passionate |
| 1:07.3 | and it is so interesting. So let's just jump right into it. |
| 1:11.0 | Without further ado, here's my conversation with Dr. Naranjo. |
| 1:13.9 | I hope you enjoy. |
| 1:31.4 | All right, Dr. Andre Naranjo, welcome to the podcast. |
| 1:34.3 | I am so pumped to talk to you about your research tonight. |
| 1:37.3 | But for those that aren't aware of it, let's start off with an introduction. |
| 1:40.1 | Tell everyone a little bit about who you are and what it is you do. |
| 1:41.5 | All right. |
| 1:47.0 | Well, I have to kind of trace my botanical heritage back a little bit. It's been, I kind of, you know, I walked into undergrad, like many other people in biology do, |
| 1:56.0 | assuming kind of like a sort of a pre-med track, thinking I had to jump through all these certain hoops in order to get into a good program |
| 2:03.4 | or something like that, right? |
