Summary

Grasslands are in desperate need of both protecting and restoring. These important and diverse ecosystems have long been viewed as less important than forests but that could not be farther from the truth. Join me and Dr. Katharine Suding as we look at the importance of old growth grasslands and what they can teach us about grassland restoration. Hello everyone and welcome to the Indefense Plants Podcast, the official podcast of indefenseplants.com.

0:05.8

What's up, this is your host Matt, welcome to the show. How is everyone doing this week?

0:10.0

I'm doing great because we're talking about some of my favorite ecosystems on this planet,

0:14.1

the grasslands. I'm a huge proponent for grasslands and there's something I did not grow up

0:18.6

understanding, but when you finally get into one, you'll get it, especially if you're a plant

0:23.6

nut. More in insect nut or really just love biodiversity because they're some of the most important

0:28.4

biodiversity ecosystems on our planet and they need proponents, especially in the realm of

0:33.2

protecting old growth grasslands. Joining us to talk about this is Dr. Catherine Seuting. She

0:39.6

is a community ecologist with a wide variety of interests, but she is turning a lot of her scientific

0:44.3

attention towards grasslands, understanding both their restoration and the dynamics of old

0:49.2

growth systems in a variety of habitats. But I don't want to steal any of her thunder. She is a

0:53.9

great proponent of grasslands and communicates their importance so eloquently. So let's just jump

0:58.9

right into it. Without further ado, here's my conversation with Dr. Catherine Seuting. I hope you enjoy.

1:18.2

All right, Dr. Catherine Seuting, it is so great to have you on the podcast. I am super excited

1:22.6

to talk to you today, but first let's start off with an introduction. Tell everyone a little

1:26.0

bit about who you are and what it is you do. Great. Yeah, it's great to be here. My name is

1:32.1

Catherine Seuting. I'm a professor at University of Colorado at Boulder. I studied plants,

1:39.6

some soils, I'm interested in how things change over time. And I call myself a community ecologist.

1:47.9

So I study how different species of plants kind of work form the diversity that we see in

1:56.2

systems like grasslands, which I think is what we're going to talk about.

1:59.3

Excellent. Yeah, a lot of really interesting projects you've worked on over the years and

2:05.3

continue to, but what brought you to all of this? I mean, were you always kind of a nature nut,
