Summary

"Don't garden under a black walnut!" If you garden in eastern North America, you may have heard some form of this advice at one point or another. Indeed, Juglans nigra has a negative reputation for being allelopathic or producing compounds that hurt neighboring plants. However, is this reputation warranted or is it a case of unscientific propaganda? Bill Michalek of The Field Guides Podcast joins us for a discussion about the science of black walnut allelopathy and what he reveals may not be the clear-cut story you were told. This episode was produced in part by Susan, Corbin, Keena, Robin, Peter, Whitney, Kenned, Margaret, Daniel, Karen, David, Earl, Jocelyn, Gary, Krysta, Elizabeth, Southern California Carnivorous Plant Enthusiasts, Pattypollinators, Peter, Judson, Ella, Alex, Dan, Pamela, Peter, Andrea, Nathan, Karyn, Michelle, Jillian, Chellie, Linda, Laura, Miz Holly, Christie, Carlos, Paleo Fern, Levi, Sylvia, Lanny, Ben, Lily, Craig, Sarah, Lor, Monika, Brandon, Jeremy, Suzanne, Kristina, Christine, Silas, Michael, Aristia, Felicidad, Lauren, Danielle, Allie, Jeffrey, Amanda, Tommy, Marcel, C Leigh, Karma, Shelby, Christopher, Alvin, Arek, Chellie, Dani, Paul, Dani, Tara, Elly, Colleen, Natalie, Nathan, Ario, Laura, Cari, Margaret, Mary, Connor, Nathan, Jan, Jerome, Brian, Azomonas, Ellie, University Greens, Joseph, Melody, Patricia, Matthew, Garrett, John, Ashley, Cathrine, Melvin, OrangeJulian, Porter, Jules, Griff, Joan, Megan, Marabeth, Les, Ali, Southside Plants, Keiko, Robert, Bryce, Wilma, Amanda, Helen, Mikey, Michelle, German, Joerg, Cathy, Tate, Steve, Kae, Carole, Mr. Keith Santner, Lynn, Aaron, Sara, Kenned, Brett, Jocelyn, Ethan, Sheryl, Runaway Goldfish, Ryan, Chris, Alana, Rachel, Joanna, Lori, Paul, Griff, Matthew, Bobby, Vaibhav, Steven, Joseph, Brandon, Liam, Hall, Jared, Brandon, Christina, Carly, Kazys, Stephen, Katherine, Mohsin Kazmi Takes Pictures, Manny, doeg, Daniel, Tim, Philip, Tim, Lisa, Brodie, Bendix, Irene, holly, Sara, and Margie.

Hello everyone and welcome to the Indefense Plants Podcast, the official podcast of indefenseplants.com.

What's up, this is your host Matt, welcome to the show. How is everyone doing this week?

0:09.6

Before we begin, I just want to say, please consider supporting the show on patreon.com-indefenseplants.

0:15.9

Monthly support for my patrons makes this show possible. So if you're enjoying it,

0:19.7

you gotta thank them, because I literally would not be doing this without their support.

0:24.6

But today, it's a very fun episode. My friend Bill Michaelc from the Field Guides podcast

0:29.6

joins us again to talk about a subject that I have always taken for granted, and that is

0:35.7

the chemical toxicity of black walnut, jughlin's Niagara. If you like me and you live in eastern

0:42.4

North America, you've grown up hearing don't plant things under black walnut. They produce

0:47.2

olilochemicals, essentially compounds that aren't used for growth and reproduction that

0:51.8

enter the soil and toxify it for other plants, and this is supposed to help them get into

0:57.2

leg up on the competition. This is something I have repeated time and time again to friends and

1:01.8

family members looking for recommendations, but as you're going to hear, it's not that straightforward.

1:07.3

In fact, it may not be that story at all. I'm going to let Bill tell you all of the interesting

1:12.9

details what they uncovered, because they did this for an episode on their podcast, the Field Guides.

1:17.7

Go check it out, because they do a much more thorough job at covering this tree in a broader sense.

1:23.4

We're not going to talk about everything black walnut today, but we are going to drill in on

1:28.1

sort of the unnecessary hype around the olila pathie of black walnut. So let's just jump right

1:34.7

into it without further ado. Here's my conversation with Bill Michaelc. I hope you enjoy.

1:48.4

All right, Bill Michaelc. Welcome back. My friend, it has been a while since we've

1:58.4

last had down the podcast, but for those that don't listen to your podcast or know who you are,

2:03.2

let's start off with a brief intro. Tell everyone a bit about who you are and what it is you do.
