Jamie Calvin is one of the most important journalists you've probably never heard of.

He's worked in the city of Chicago all his life on social justice issues, and he's the

reporter who fleshed out the videotape of the shooting of Laquan McDonald in Chicago that

has created such an uproar and an impetus for change.

I sat down with Jamie the other day to talk not just about the McDonald case, but about

his life, and where we go on this issue of police community relations and excessive force.

Jamie Calvin, you are a lifelong Chicago and a high park lifeer.

I am a native.

Yeah, and your dad was kind of a legend here around the University of Chicago as a kind

of tribune of the first amendment, and talk a little bit about him and the influence

he had on you.

Yes, so my father, Harry Calvin Jr. was a professor at the law school constitutional scholar,

and his great passion was the first amendment.

So he wrote constantly about it for legal journals, general magazines, and towards the end of

his life, and he died at 60.

So he died young.

He wanted to bring together his thoughts about the first amendment that had been scattered

in publications of various sorts in a single continuous work, and he began about five years

before he finally died.

When he died, he left a 1,400 page first draft of this sort of masterwork.
