Summary

In this episode, we are diving into the back catalogue to appreciate an under-appreciated group of plants - the sedges (genus Carex). Join me and my friend and botanist Paul Marcum as we discuss the amazing world of sedges, why they are important, and why he loves them so much. This episode originally aired in November of 2016, so if you noticed a difference in recording quality, that is why. Either way, enjoy our adventure into the wonderful world of sedges from a true Sedge Head. It's been a busy couple of weeks here at In Defensive Plants HQ. And for that reason, we're heading into the back catalog of In Defensive Plants episodes to bring you an episode that I think needs to be heard yet again.

And that is our sedgesode or our sedge episode. Sedges don't get nearly enough love and I am

0:28.8

guilty of that myself. They're just so difficult to identify without some fine-tune machinery

0:34.7

and a lot of attention to detail and I just don't have it in me just yet.

0:37.9

I'll get there eventually, but that is why people like my friend Paul Markham are so important.

0:43.8

Paul is a lover of all things, gramminoids, but he has a special love for sedges and he is one of

0:48.8

the most talented sedge botanists I've ever met. I don't know anyone personally that has got more aptitude for

identifying them and appreciated them than my friend Paul. So let's go celebrate sedges with botanist

So who are you exactly?

1:23.5

And what do you do?

1:24.5

Yeah, I'm a botanist at the Natural History Survey is what I do now.

1:28.3

I'm originally from Columbus, Ohio.

Grew up in the city.

And then ultimately, as high school went on, we moved to a very small part of southern

Ohio, all wooded, very country.

And I think from then on is when I maybe changed my trajectory of what I thought I would do and, you know, got excited, you know, about hunting at that time, which I don't hunt anymore of it, and just being outside, hiking, getting in nature.

So it wasn't plants right out of the...
