So Colin Powell, the Bush-era Secretary of State, it was announced this morning has passed

away. He was 84 years old. In his post-administration life, he was kind of became a political figure

in a different way. He kind of became the Republican guy who was always endorsing Democrats.

That's a very popular thing on MSNBC. I mean it started with Barack Obama and kind of went

from there. It's like this guy just keeps endorsing all the Democratic candidates but

then saying he's a Republican, what is going on? And I think there was definitely a disconnect

from the conservative audience with Colin Powell later in life. But it is worth remembering

how popular this guy was at one point. It's almost impossible in the United States of America

to have somebody like this. I don't think anybody exists like this anymore.

Colin Powell, not running in 1996, is one of the major what-ifs of American politics

from that period. He had enormous popularity. A 73 to 6 favorable, unfavorable, engallup

in 1995. And polls showed him leading Bill Clinton right up until his November announcement

that he wouldn't run. That's from Steve Kornacki. He actually posts a poll from back in those

days in 1995 where Powell actually leads Bill Clinton by 16 points in a pre-election

poll. And he actually led the field, even if he ran not as a Republican, but as a third

party candidate beating both Bob Dole and Bill Clinton. But a 16 point lead and who,
