Summary

If you could travel back in time 4.5 million years, how different would the flora look in your area? That is a difficult question to answer because we don't know of many fossil beds that capture this time period. That is one of the reasons the Gray Fossil Site in Tennessee is so amazing. Join me and Paleobotanist Dr. Liz Hermsen for a discussion about some of the amazing discoveries she and her colleagues are making from this unique paleontological gold mine. This episode was produced in part by Pamela, Peter, Andrea, Nathan, Karyn, Michelle, Jillian, Chellie, Linda, Laura, Miz Holly, Christie, Carlos, Paleo Fern, Levi, Sylvia, Lanny, Ben, Lily, Craig, Sarah, Lor, Monika, Brandon, Jeremy, Suzanne, Kristina, Christine, Silas, Michael, Aristia, Felicidad, Lauren, Danielle, Allie, Jeffrey, Amanda, Tommy, Marcel, C Leigh, Karma, Shelby, Christopher, Alvin, Arek, Chellie, Dani, Paul, Dani, Tara, Elly, Colleen, Natalie, Nathan, Ario, Laura, Cari, Margaret, Mary, Connor, Nathan, Jan, Jerome, Brian, Azomonas, Ellie, University Greens, Joseph, Melody, Patricia, Matthew, Garrett, John, Ashley, Cathrine, Melvin, OrangeJulian, Porter, Jules, Griff, Joan, Megan, Marabeth, Les, Ali, Southside Plants, Keiko, Robert, Bryce, Wilma, Amanda, Helen, Mikey, Michelle, German, Joerg, Cathy, Tate, Steve, Kae, Carole, Mr. Keith Santner, Lynn, Aaron, Sara, Kenned, Brett, Jocelyn, Ethan, Sheryl, Runaway Goldfish, Ryan, Chris, Alana, Rachel, Joanna, Lori, Paul, Griff, Matthew, Bobby, Vaibhav, Steven, Joseph, Brandon, Liam, Hall, Jared, Brandon, Christina, Carly, Kazys, Stephen, Katherine, Mohsin Kazmi Takes Pictures, Manny, doeg, Daniel, Tim, Philip, Tim, Lisa, Brodie, Bendix, Irene, holly, Sara, and Margie.

Hello everyone and welcome to the Independence Plants Podcast, the official podcast of

IndependencePlants.com. What's up? This is your host Matt, welcome to the show. How's everyone

0:08.8

doing this week? Today I've got something super special for you because it involves a fossil

0:13.2

site that is near and dear to my heart, amazing and in a place where I would never expect

0:17.5

there to be a fossil site. I am talking about the gray fossil site of Eastern Tennessee.

0:23.2

It's a unique area, it's got a cool museum, you should all go check out if you ever find

0:27.2

yourself in that area and it's preserved an era of Earth's history that is in desperate

0:32.4

need of more scrutiny because it's pretty much what was going on in the flora and fauna of North

0:38.3

America right before the glaciers hit. Joining us to talk about this is Dr. Liz Hormson. She's a

0:43.7

paleo botanist who has a particular affinity for platform and function and she's putting it

0:48.1

to great use at the gray fossil site. But first I want to tell you about my friends over at

0:53.6

Soul Tech Solutions. Look, if you like me you move around a lot and not every apartment or house

0:58.5

is going to have the best natural lighting for your plants and that is why I turn to LED lights.

1:04.3

And Soul Tech Solutions offers some of the best I have come across. They take both function and

1:09.7

aesthetics into consideration and have produced high quality photosynthetic plant lights that give

1:15.1

off a warm white glow. These aren't going to blind you or make you sit in harsh lighting while

1:20.3

your plants are getting all of the benefit. And best of all, these can grow plants. I've been

1:24.9

German aiming scenes with mine over the last couple of weeks and it is fantastic. I am so pleased

1:29.7

with these and because they're LEDs they last for an incredibly long time. For instance,

1:34.0

the aspect pendant light can last up to 15 years. Finally, we can be proud of the lights we're

1:40.0

using to grow our plants. They've become a fixture in our home and they offer a variety of plant

1:45.3

lights from track lights to pendants and even just the bulbs if you've got your own fixture.
