What's up? This is your host Matt, welcome to the show. How's everyone doing this week?

0:09.6

Today we're going to talk about the plate of a palm tree, named Sudo-Fenix Sargentii or the Florida

0:15.8

Cherry Palm. The plate of this tree has a lot to do with overdevelopment and poaching,

0:21.3

and unfortunately its numbers are not doing well in the wild, but thanks to people like my guest,

0:27.1

there is hope for the species. Joining us from Fair Trial Tropical Botanical Garden is Jennifer

0:32.2

Poesley, and she's going to tell us all about what has happened to this palm and what 30 years of

0:37.2

efforts in palm conservation can do to bring a species back from the brink. This is really inspiring

0:43.6

and it's one of those conservation success stories that we need to be shouting at the top of our

0:48.0

lungs, but I don't want to steal any of her thunder, so let's just jump right into it. Without further

0:52.5

All right, Jennifer Poesley, it is so great to have you on the podcast. I'm really excited to

1:18.7

who you are and what it is you do. Okay, thank you Matt. It's really nice to meet you.

1:32.4

Tropical Botanic Garden, which is in Miami, Florida, and I've actually worked at the garden for

1:39.3

maybe 21 years at this point. I've been the conservation program manager since Joyce

1:44.9

Mishinsky left, and I know you interviewed her a few years ago. She's now the CPC

1:51.0

Center for Plant Conservation Director, but we have a small team of staff that focuses on the

1:56.3

rare plants of our region and conserving the germ plasm of these rare species of Florida,

2:02.5

Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. That is excellent. I'm a huge fan of Fair Child, and it's

2:08.4

really great to talk to anyone that works there, has got their hands sort of in the process of
