Today I want to talk to you about fish oil because it's one of the

most ubiquitous supplements everywhere. It's one of the earliest supplements that I sort of

woke up to what a fraud it was. And really it led me to write this book. It was sort of my first

write, take daily, how supplements hijack our health. So fish oil, the health trend that backfired.

Let's talk about it. How did we get here? For almost four decades, fish oil has been sold as one of the most essential supplements

for health. Doctors recommend it. Functional medicine clinics all over the Western world at least

sell it. Influencers rave about it, all because of one story that started in the 1970s.

Researchers observed that the Inuit populations eating a high

fish diet had low heart disease. And just like that, the wellness industry ran with the assumption

that eating fish equals fish oil pills or the fat in fish equals heart health.

Do you see the problems with this? Do you see the logic leaps there? I don't think you need

a PhD or even a background in statistics to see how problematic that assumption is. The logic was

flawed from the beginning and it's really not been tested, but the meta studies that I'm

going to tell you about are going to blow your mind. The Inuit weren't taking two-year-old

capsules made with rancidity covering flavorings and solvents to cover up the rancid taste.
