Summary

Upwards of 170 million acres of prairie once covered North America. Today, humans have reduced this to only 0.01%. The remnant prairies (fragments of the original, pre-colonial prairie landscape) that remain represent vestiges of this once great ecosystem and harbor many threatened and endangered species. In this episode, we discuss the impending destruction of one of Illinois last great remnant prairies. Bell Bowl Prairie is slated to be bulldozed for the expansion of an airport at the end of this month but people like Jennifer Kuroda are doing everything they can to make sure that doesn't happen. Tune in and learn what you can do to help in the fight to protect this irreplaceable habitat. Hello everyone and welcome to the indefenseaplants podcast, the official podcast of indefenseaplants.com.

What's up, this is your host Matt, welcome to the show. How's everyone doing this week?

0:09.6

I'm in a rough place, I gotta be honest, and this episode will tell you why,

0:13.5

because what we're gonna talk about today hits really close to home,

0:16.8

then that is the impending destruction of a remnant prairie.

0:21.5

Now, if you don't live in a state where there's prairies, this might not be as obvious to you,

0:26.0

but remnant prairies are something very special, because we've destroyed over 99% of prairie on this

0:32.8

continent, and what remnant prairies represent are essentially the old growth forests of grasslands.

0:37.5

They're irreplaceable, the biodiversity they support cannot be recreated in our lifetimes.

0:42.6

I'm of course talking about bellbowl prairie. The threat that's being placed upon it is the

0:47.0

expansion of an airport to accommodate shipping via Amazon and UPS, and to lose this prairie would

0:52.8

be a travesty. Joining us to talk about this is Jennifer Carrota. She's the president of the

0:57.5

Cynacidbe Autobahn Society, and she is very passionate about biodiversity conservation, not only

1:02.6

for her, but for her children and the future. This is a really important issue, and at the end,

1:07.4

we talk about a bunch of different ways that you can have input on this process to hopefully

1:12.4

save this prairie from destruction. I'm warning you, this is coming up quick. The decisions have

1:17.2

to be made before October is over, so I don't want to take time from it any longer. Without further

1:22.3

ado, here's my conversation with Jennifer Carrota. I hope you enjoy.

1:39.8

All right, Jennifer Carrota, thank you so much for coming on the podcast. It's great to have you

1:43.6

here, but first let's start off by telling everyone a little bit about who you are and what it is you do.

1:49.2

Sure, and my name is Jennifer Carrota. I am the current president of Cynacidbe Autobahn,

1:54.2

which is a chapter of the National Autobahn Society. It is a completely volunteer-based
