Summary
Upwards of 170 million acres of prairie once covered North America. Today, humans have reduced this to only 0.01%. The remnant prairies (fragments of the original, pre-colonial prairie landscape) that remain represent vestiges of this once great ecosystem and harbor many threatened and endangered species. In this episode, we discuss the impending destruction of one of Illinois last great remnant prairies. Bell Bowl Prairie is slated to be bulldozed for the expansion of an airport at the end of this month but people like Jennifer Kuroda are doing everything they can to make sure that doesn't happen. Tune in and learn what you can do to help in the fight to protect this irreplaceable habitat. | 0:00.0 | Hello, everyone, and welcome to the In Defensive Plants Podcast, the official podcast of |
| 0:04.3 | IndefensivePlants.com. What's up? This is your host, Matt. Welcome to the show. How's everyone doing this week? I'm in a rough place. I got to be honest. And this episode will tell you why, because what we're going to talk about today hits really close to home. Then that is the impending destruction of a remnant prairie. Now, if you don't live in a state where |
| 0:23.2 | there's prairies, this might not be as obvious to you, but remnant prairies are something very |
| 0:27.9 | special because we've destroyed over 99% of prairie on this continent. And what remnant prairies |
| 0:34.4 | represent are essentially the old growth forests of grasslands. |
| 0:37.6 | They're irreplaceable. The biodiversity they support cannot be recreated in our lifetimes. |
| 0:42.7 | I'm, of course, talking about Bell Bowl Prairie. |
| 0:45.1 | The threat that's being placed upon it is the expansion of an airport to accommodate shipping via Amazon and UPS. |
| 0:51.7 | And to lose this prairie would be a travesty. |
| 1:11.2 | Joining us to talk about this is Jennifer Corota. She's the president of the Sinesipi Audubon Society, and she is very passionate about biodiversity conservation, not only for her, but for her children and the future. This is a really important issue, and at the end, we talk about a bunch of different ways that you can have input on this process to hopefully save this prairie from destruction. I'm warning you, this is coming up quick. |
| 1:16.6 | The decisions have to be made before October is over. So I don't want to take time from it any |
| 1:21.5 | longer. Without further ado, here's my conversation with Jennifer Corota. I hope you enjoy. |
| 1:39.7 | Thank you. with Jennifer Corota. I hope you enjoy. All right, Jennifer Corota, thank you so much for coming on the podcast. It's great to have you here. |
| 1:44.0 | But first, let's start off by telling everyone a little bit about who you are and what it is you do. |
| 1:49.2 | Sure. |
| 1:49.6 | My name is Jennifer Corota. |
| 1:51.1 | I am the current president of Cincinnati Audubon, which is a chapter of the National Audubon Society. |
| 1:57.7 | It is a completely volunteer-based organization, so that is not my full-time job. |
| 2:03.6 | My full-time job is in healthcare. So this is just a passion of mine on the side. |
| 2:11.0 | I'd love to like switch, make the switch over to a conservation career, but I'm so comfortable |
| 2:15.6 | in my healthcare career that it's just, |
| 2:18.1 | it's never happened. Yeah, it happens. But this is a great illustration of just how people from all |
