Summary

The Happier In Hollywood Retreat 2023 is in the books! It was a huge success, and now Sarah and Liz are discussing what was fantastic (the people, the place, the sound bath, the conversation) and what they’d change for the next one (less food). In Take A Hike, inspired by the weekend, they talk about the Magic of Community. Next, in The Craft (& Fain), they share a writing exercise (suggested by a retreat attendee) designed to help you tell your story in meetings. This week’s Hollywood Hack will improve your posture: the Gaiam Balance Ball Chair. Finally, Sarah has an Audible series recommendation — Slayers: A Buffyverse Story. That's me, Sarah Fein. On this podcast we talk about being writers in Hollywood, how we balance a career and friendship, and how to survive the war of attrition that is life in Los Angeles.

Today we're gonna look back at the happier and Hollywood retreat. What went well? What can we change to make it better?

1:07.5

Then we'll talk about the magic of community. We're feeling very inspired by our community of writers after the retreat this weekend.

Hi, Liz and Sarah, just listening to your latest episode and I know you like learning terms from other industries.

1:38.5

I work in agile UX design, think apps, digital services, etc. And we have a term for when we've finished a chunk of work, a retro.

1:47.5

It's short for retrospective and describes looking back on what you did, what worked, what could be improved.

1:53.5

I think this is a nicer option than post-mortem as we typically only do this when something has gone drastically wrong as in a real post-mortem when you're looking at something that died.

2:03.5

I'm sure your retreat will go very well. So maybe you want a retro rather than a post-mortem when it's over.

2:09.5

Another good technique is actually called a pre-mortem, which is where you sit down ahead of time and ask the question, what would it look like if this completely failed and it helps you prepare for that not to happen.

2:21.5

Thank you for that, Kate. Fortunately, that did not happen on this retreat.

2:25.5

Which brings us to our segment from the treadmill desk of where we talk about what's most pressing in our work psyches. And this week, thanks to Kate's new term, it's our retreat retro.

2:38.5

We had planned to do a post-mortem, but thanks to Kate, we're changing that to a retro.
