Summary

Have you noticed how it’s more-more-more labs your doctor orders? Ever wonder WHY? Why would a healthy woman (me) go for routine annual labs and be asked for $2,600? Let’s talk about my research leading me to wonder if lab tests are really a good measure of our health. And, please let me know if you want me to write a book about this! (I’m working on it, assuming you do!)

So we're in an environment where doctors love to prescribe labs because patients love to get them

0:09.9

because they think it tells them the status of their health. You deserve informed consent.

Your lab test should inform, not scare you into dependency. So if your lab work comes with a prescription, but no lifestyle

And today I want to talk to you about lab tests and how when we used to have just a handful of them a generation or two ago,

0:58.0

we now have literally hundreds and hundreds of them. And this sort of became a front of mind for me

1:07.0

when I went in for my annual lab testing, which every year I debate whether I'm even

1:11.3

going to do lab testing anymore. I've had so many strange experiences with labs, which I'll

1:16.9

talk about a couple of them in this episode today. But I went in for my annual lab testing,

1:23.1

and I went to Lab Corps, and they asked me for $2,600 before they were going to draw my blood.

1:31.9

And I just laughed out loud and I said, hey, thanks.

1:34.7

No, but no thanks.

1:36.6

And just walked back out the door and told my practitioner, yeah, I'm not doing that.

1:41.7

So anyway, my practitioner had me come into his office and he drew the blood for $400

1:48.1

something, which I still think is a lot.

1:50.2

But I kind of take issue with this because when you're dealing with a healthy person

1:55.3

who has no diagnoses, no health complaints, and they try to charge you $2,600 for routine lab tests,

2:05.4

which is more than the average person makes in a month. I think we've gone overboard. So I already

2:14.1

had lots of issues with strange aberrations in lab tests throughout my life.

2:20.9

So I decided to pull those together and potentially write a book about it.
