Summary

How do parasitic plants find an appropriate host and what determines their range of host possibilities? These are the kinds of questions that drive Dr. Caitlin Conn's research. Join us as we explore some of the insight she has gained into parasitic plant ecology. What's up?

This is your host, Matt.

0:07.0

Welcome to the show.

0:07.9

How is everyone doing this week?

0:10.2

Well, I know I'm doing well because we are going to be talking about some of my

0:14.1

favorite plants in the entire plant kingdom, the parasites.

0:18.4

Now, of course, parasites is not a family genus or species of plants. It's a

0:23.7

lifestyle that's cropped up amongst a bunch of different groups. And to study the interactions

0:28.9

and how much they parasitize their hosts and how it might have evolved is a fascinating realm

0:34.2

of scientific inquiry. Joining us to talk about this is Dr. Caitlin Khan. Broadly speaking,

0:39.5

her research falls under two big questions. How do parasites perceive their hosts and what

0:44.9

determines the range of host preferences that different parasitic plants can take? Most of her work

0:50.6

focuses on the family Oroban Casey, which produces some of the most beautiful

0:54.9

parasites, in my opinion, and her research gives us wonderful insights into the evolution

0:59.2

of this lifestyle, not only within this family, but across all of the parasitic plants we can

1:04.1

find on this planet.

1:05.7

So let's just jump right into it.

1:07.7

Without further ado, here's my conversation with Dr. Caitlin Con. I hope you enjoy.

1:26.0

All right, Dr. Caitlin Con, it is so great to have you on the podcast.

1:29.3

I'm really excited to talk about your research today, but first let's introduce yourself.
