→ Timestamps: (00:00) Section 93 answers deep theological questions about the nature of God and His children.(01:41) One step at a time, grace for grace, we will make it to the Celestial Kingdom. As we improve and grow, the light we receive shows us more we need to do. Divine discontent is meant to motivate, not discourage.(20:16) Don’t judge others. They may be more faithful to the light they have than we are to the light we have.(22:21) The reciprocal nature of grace in the Greek charis – χάρις.(26:17) Some early Christian theologians wrestled with the idea of an embodied God. How can God be everywhere and yet have a body? Our understanding of light and truth helps explain how both are possible.(29:39) Different translations of John 1.1. The Logos can be understood as participatory.(35:43) We were with the Father in the pre-earth council.(37:49) Many trials await the Saints in Missouri in 1833. The timing of this revelation could be a gift of light to help them get through a difficult time.(40:32) Is man inherently good or evil? Augustine’s view of the depravity of man became orthodoxy, but this section teaches something different.(43:39) We all miss the mark (hamartia– the word translated as “sin”) and need to keep practicing. Our Heavenly Father is a God of do-overs and second chances. As we make covenants we are born again.(47:45) Intelligence was not created nor made by God. This part of man has always existed and is independent.(54:35) Truth is knowledge of things as they really are, as they were, and as they are to come. The Deification of man was taught in the texts of the Bible and understood by the early Christians.(1:00:43) See people for who they are and what they have the potential to become.(1:03:32) Bring up your children in light and truth. The Lord rebukes those who need to be more diligent and concerned at home, their primary responsibility.

Welcome to Talking Scripture. I'm Mike.

0:26.0

And I'm Bryce.

0:33.4

And today we are going to be in Section 93 of the Doctrine and Covenants that was given to Joseph in May of 1833.

0:43.0

When he's 27 years old, this is absolutely incredible. Joseph is talking about things that no one in his day was talking about.

0:56.7

Joseph is going to lay things out as very simple doctrines that are just unheard of in the world, about premortality of man, about how we get back to exaltation, the process of gaining salvation, priority over church and family. I mean, he is just laying some of the most

1:03.5

significant doctrines down, and he's 27 years old, Mike. That's phenomenal. He's also answering

1:10.1

so many questions that theologians fought over

1:12.7

for hundreds of years. Questions such as, what is the nature of God? What is the nature of man? Like,

1:19.3

are we inherently good? Are we inherently evil? How do we answer these questions? And a lot of these

1:24.1

things are discussed right here. Yeah, he's going to take us back to the premortal life and forward into the eternities.

1:30.9

And the amazing thing is you know when the church gives us a single section to study over one full week of Come Follow Me, that it's a landmark section.

1:41.4

And 93 is one of those.

1:43.6

It is one of the great gifts of the restoration. And let me tell you why I love it so

1:48.2

much. After having taught thousands of Latter-day Saints over the years, I've asked so many of them,

1:55.8

do you think you're going to be in the celestial kingdom? I've tried to ask, what is your expectation?

2:01.3

Do you think you're going to be a celestial being? And without fail, almost universally, I get hesitance.

2:08.9

I get people answering the question, well, I hope so, or I think so, or I don't know if I'm going to be

2:15.3

saved. And I really do believe that's because many people don't fully understand the process.
