This is the Partially Examine Life, episode 334. Part 2, we've been talking about Gabriel Marcel's essay on the ontological

mystery we had just finished talking about trying to figure out what he means by a

mystery I mean it's we've said it is not a problem because a problem I think there's

a mino's paradox kind of thing here where for something to be a legitimate

problem you have to know the general field of its solution right you have to know

something in order to even ask a question.

Marcell is claiming that we're sort of begging the question when we do that with some of the most

important things, when we, you know know our fundamental relationship toward meaning in

our own lives we've mentioned the mind body connection is being another mystery right

yes you can be a brain scientist and talk about correlations between consciousness

and brain states and things like that. But as a person actually having this

experience there is something that just at least seems fundamentally mysterious and he's,

Marcell is suggesting that the way to deal with mystery, it's not just a matter of like,

oh it's just a mystery, let's just go home.

Like we still deal with it, these are the most important things in our lives, but you don't

necessarily try to solve it.

It's not necessary to solve it.

You can leave something mysterious about it and still deal with it, you know, intelligently in a desirable way.
