Summary

Here's the final episode in the Yunnan history series. In this episode, we pick up in 1875 in the wake of the Margary Affair and take the story through the end of the Qing and into the Warlord and Republican era. Warlords Cai E, Tang Jiyao, Long Yun, and Lu Han, all make appearances. Part 5 runs almost 49 minutes which is 15-20 minutes longer than I like these CHP episodes to be. The series concludes a bit prematurely, a hundred years later in 1975. Sorry to end on such a downer as the Cultural Revolution and the Shadian Incident of 1975. I really don't have enough material to make a Part 6. So let's just leave it at that. I hope it was informative and helpful. 0:47.4	Those Europeans engaged in all manners of commerce saw Yunnan in similar ways as past

0:55.6	From a Burma, Laos, and Vietnam perspective, Yunnan was the ultimate transit route from
1:01.9	their part of Southeast Asia to southwest China.
1:06.2	So this Yunnan myth of the province serving as a convenient springboard to every corner
1:10.6	of the China market drove a lot of Europeans to the province and the myth of the commercial
1:17.6	potential of Yunnan drove many ventures to bankruptcy, ruin, and in some cases led to
1:23.0	many a death of those involved.
1:25.8	One of the most noted cheerleaders and propagators of the Yunnan myth was the renowned British
1:30.6	explorer and adventurer, Archipold Ross Kahun.
